Annual Show |
|
The 4th Annual
Motoring Fun Day at Stornoway Airport was a huge success, this year with
a large turnout of plant from local contractors a large turnout of
people young and old. The plant on show displayed the high
standard of hard work put in by the contractors, with vehicles
highly polished and well presented |

Opening the show this year was
Dr John Smith from Carloway, reminiscing about his own experiences as a
lorry driver in his younger years, driving about in the old style
lorries of yesteryear – a big thank to him for opening the show. There was plenty going on to
keep young and old entertained. Bringing back memories of bygone days
was a Fordson tractor which is, at present, being restored to its former
glory and an Albion lorry belonging to Edward Mackay which came all the
way from Brora.
There were also a large selection of Classic Cars, giving a good
complement to the other vehicles on display. A post vintage car – a 1930
Austin 7 Jammy owned by Jan Gold was the oldest vehicle on show. There was a Bedford CA van
owned by Roddy Murray Inverness which brought back memories to a lot of
workers who were travelling in them to work in the 1970s.
New this year we had a marquee
housing a photo display and a large display of model vehicles by Ronnie
Cameron, who came all the way from Inverness. The excellent photo display
gave an interesting account of the transport of the island in the last
century with written comments giving details of the history of each one,
more history was given about some of the photo`s which was greatly
appreciated.
Also new this year in the marquee
was a visitors’ book, with very interesting comments being written about the
show. The visitors to the show were international, coming from as far a
field as France and Holland even the Uists “the south sea islands” |

The main attraction was a “green
goddess” which was donated to the club. There was a competition to give her
a name – beginning with the letter G. The winner of the competition with
the name “Gypsy” won a £30 voucher donated by Underground as a prize with
second being pulled out of a hat winning a £30.00 fuel voucher which was
donated. The green goddess will now affectionately be known as “Gypsy”.
There was the usual game stalls
keeping the young happy, Bungee run, bouncy castles, digger rides and Noddy
train.
The committee of the Western Isles
Transport Preservation Group would like to thank all the Contractors,
Hauliers Bus Owners and sponsors of our trophies and other equipment needed
to hold this show. The individuals, who put so much effort into the
displaying of their vehicles, the Western Isles Classic Car Club for their
grand display, all those who made the journey across the Minch to display
their wares, the folk at the barbeque and the teas, who kept everyone fed
and watered, all the volunteers and all those who gave donations, HIAL – for
allowing us to use their ground for the show each year, the Stornoway
Gazette – for excellent promotion in the local Gazette, to the public for
their continuing support and to all who made the Motoring Fun Day such a
success. Until next years show, thank you all.
Next years show to be held on the
11th of August 2007
